What Sets Malarkey Apart

The Technology Behind the Shingle

What makes Malarkey stand out from other shingle brands is that they engineer them from the asphalt core up. Every product in their lineup shares the same foundational technologies that make Malarkey shingles genuinely outperform standard products.

NEX® Polymer Modified Asphalt

Malarkey’s proprietary rubberized asphalt formulation combines high-grade asphalt with synthetic and upcycled rubber polymers from recycled tires. The result is a shingle core that flexes rather than cracks, delivering greater impact resistance, granule adhesion, and longevity than standard asphalt shingles.

Scotchgard™ Algae Protection

Malarkey integrates copper-infused granules directly into the shingle surface, which prevents the growth of blue-green algae and other organic materials that cause dark staining and streaking on roofs. This protection is built in, meaning it’s not a coating that wears off, and it comes standard across the entire Malarkey product line.

The Zone® Nailing Area

Malarkey’s patented wider nailing area gives installers a larger, more forgiving target, so that they can be sure that every nail penetrates both shingle layers for maximum fastening strength. Misplaced nails are a leading cause of wind damage and warranty voids on asphalt shingles from brands other than Malarkey. The Zone reduces that risk.

Advanced Adhesive Bonds

Malarkey shingles use up to 50% more adhesive bonds than standard shingles, including six separate bond points, including laminate, rain, and wind seals, made from synthetic rubber adhesive that resists dry-out over time. These advanced adhesive bonds deliver superior protection against wind-driven rain and shingle delamination.

Upcycled Sustainable Materials

Every Malarkey shingle incorporates polymers from upcycled rubber tires and plastic bags into the asphalt formulation. The use of these materials improves shingle durability while also diverting waste from landfills. An average roof installation using Malarkey shingles diverts the equivalent of several tires and thousands of plastic bags.

Smog-Reducing Granules

Malarkey was the first shingle manufacturer to integrate smog-reducing granules into their products. These granules help break down nitrogen oxide compounds in the air, which are the same pollutants responsible for smog. Installing a Malarkey roof has the environmental equivalent of planting approximately two trees per roof.

Malarkey Shingle Options Available from Remedy Roofworks

Malarkey offers four architectural shingle products, each sharing the same core NEX® technology but offering different levels of performance, thickness, and impact resistance.

Entry-Level Performance with The Highlander®

The Highlander® is Malarkey’s most affordable architectural shingle and the entry point into their NEX® polymer-modified lineup. Don’t let “entry-level” mislead you, however. The Highlander carries a Class 3 impact rating and outperforms many competitors’ mid-tier products.

The Highlander® is Greg Malarkey’s personal favorite and a reliable choice for homeowners who want above-average durability at a competitive price.

The Vista® is Malarkey’s most popular shingle, and it’s easy to see why. Slightly thicker than the Highlander®, it upgrades to a Class 4 impact rating (the highest available) at a price point that’s only modestly higher.

It delivers one of the best cost-to-performance ratios in the industry and is certified for FORTIFIED™ roofing programs. For most homeowners, the Vista is the sweet spot in the Malarkey lineup.

Frequently Asked Questions About Malarkey Shingles

Here are honest answers to the questions we hear most from homeowners when they’re considering Malarkey shingles.

What makes Malarkey shingles different from standard asphalt shingles?

The biggest difference is NEX® polymer-modified asphalt, Malarkey’s proprietary formulation that combines standard asphalt with rubber polymers from upcycled tires. This rubberizes the shingle core, making it more flexible, more impact-resistant, and better at retaining granules over time. On top of that, every Malarkey shingle includes built-in algae-resistant granules, a wider nailing area (The Zone®), and more adhesive bonds than standard shingles. It’s a fundamentally better-engineered product.

What does class 4 impact resistance mean, and why does it matter?

UL 2218 Class 4 is the highest impact-resistance rating available for roofing shingles, determined by dropping a 2-inch steel ball from 20 feet without damaging the shingles. In practical terms, it means the shingle is significantly more resistant to hail, heavy debris, and impact damage than standard products. Many homeowner’s insurance companies offer premium discounts for homes with Class 4-rated roofs, which can offset a portion of the higher material cost over time.

Does Malarkey’s algae protection actually work?

Yes! Malarkey integrates copper-infused granules directly into the shingle surface, which is the same principle as the copper strips sometimes installed near roof ridges to prevent algae growth, but built into every shingle. The Scotchgard™ protection on Legacy® and Windsor® products provides one of the longest-lasting algae resistance warranties in the industry. Unlike topical treatments that wear off, this protection is embedded in the granule layer and lasts the life of the shingle.

Are Malarkey shingles more expensive than other brands?

Malarkey shingles typically cost somewhat more than standard asphalt shingles from budget manufacturers, but they’re competitively priced against other premium brands like GAF and CertainTeed while offering genuinely superior technical specifications. For most homeowners, the added durability, impact resistance, and granule retention justify the modest premium over the life of the roof.

What warranty comes with Malarkey shingles?

All Malarkey architectural shingles carry a limited lifetime warranty for the shingles themselves. Wind warranties range up to 130 MPH on Vista®, Legacy®, and Windsor® products. Extended warranty coverage, including enhanced wind and algae warranties, is available when a Malarkey Certified Contractor installs a complete Malarkey roof system with all five components: shingles, underlayment, ice-and-water barrier, starter shingles, and hip and ridge shingles.
